The first portable phone - 1922 (video)
This short film produced in 1922 rescued from the archives of Pathé seems to show that portable phones have been around quite a while. Two women connect a phone to a fire hydrant, open an umbrella that serves as the antenna and speak to an operator that puts them on a gramophone disc to be heard through the headset. No, I have no idea that it actually worked.
