When we tested Nuclear Bombs

The Atlantic has a fascinating and frightening collection of photographs shot from the late 1940s through the 1960s depicting America's many nuclear tests - above ground, below ground, aerial and under water. As a child of the 50s I can remember some of these images. The animated gif shown above was etched in my young mind as a constant reminder of the fragility of those times. We all expected to be incinerated at any moment and "duck and cover" was all the rage.

There is also a collection of essays asking, Can we unlearn the bomb?.
